Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
