Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this work might appear closer to a difficult academic examination than a new pop project from a musician who just had a previous hit featured an international K-pop icon. Split into 4 different movements and performed in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, carried by the lush presence of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone makes the work of other artists seem quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, and full credit going to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds with the present, its scale feel far greater here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues into the wild track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every track finishes at a completely distinct place from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the gap of bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins upward. That trick gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
