An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in any cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in every aspects of official operations, including transport usage to communication habits.
