Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to remain inside as severe gales strike the nation.

Severe gales reaching speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 properties without power and led agencies to cancel more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by domestic outlets.

The gales are influencing the whole South Island and lower areas of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in core zones such as these major districts.

People have been encouraged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and get ready for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting households predominantly in the southern region, though officials report that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, and power lines and trees have been brought down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was swept into moving cars on a street by a intensive burst, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel in and out of the urban area have been halted due to the gusts, while certain highways and community centers are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Similar gusts are affecting Australia, bringing a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.
